What Are Your Rights And Responsibilities As A Permanent Resident In The USA?

Medliant is a leading agency in sponsoring international Registered Nurses on EB3 (Green Card) Visas, granting successful applicants permanent residence status in the USA. It is important to understand the rights and responsibilities as a permanent resident in the USA, which can impact your ability to later become a US citizen in as early as five years (a process called naturalization).

Medliant USRNs are issued a valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), which serves as proof of your legal status in the USA. This card is often referred to as a “Green Card.” This Permanent Resident Card indicates that you are allowed to live and work in the USA. It can also be used to reenter the United States after traveling abroad at a port of entry (land or sea). If you are outside of the USA for more than 12 months, then you will need to show additional documentation to re-enter the USA while you are a permanent resident. It is recommended that you visit USCIS.gov or contact USCIS directly to learn about the requirements for reentry if you plan to be outside of the USA for more than 12 months after the completion of your 2.5 year contract with Medliant.

According to USCIS, as a permanent resident in the USA, you have the right to:

● Live permanently anywhere in the United States

● Work in the United States

● Own property in the United States

● Attend public school

● Apply for a driver’s license in your state or territory

● Join certain branches of the U.S. armed forces

● Receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicare benefits (if you are eligible)

● Apply to become a U.S. citizen once you are eligible

● Request visas for your spouse and unmarried children (under the ages of 21 years old) to live in the United States

● Leave and return to the United States under certain conditions

As a permanent resident, you have the responsibility to:

● Obey all federal, state, and local laws

● Pay federal, state, and local income taxes

● Register with the Selective Service (U.S. armed forces), if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 26

● Maintain your immigration status

● Carry proof of your permanent resident status at all times

● Change your address online or provide it in writing to USCIS within 10 days of each time you move
