What qualifications do I need for a United States nurse position?

Working as a Nurse in the U.S.

How do you determine which hospital?

We consider your skills, experience, and goals when determining which hospital is best suited to you. We consider both your preferences and the needs of the hospital to ensure that we make a match that works well for nurses and the facilities.

What do U.S. hospitals expect from their nurses?

Nurses are treated as professionals in the U.S., and as a Registered Nurse, you will most likely have more autonomy than you are used to at home. Medliant will thoroughly prepare you for the differences you will encounter when you begin working in a U.S. hospital. Our preparation will make certain you will know what to expect on the job.

When does my assignment in the U.S. begin?

Once accepted into the program, it takes approximately 12 to 24 months before you can begin your assignment in the U.S. The amount of time it will take to process your visa application is ultimately dependent on the movement of the "current" priority date for your paticular nationality. "Current priority dates" are issued monthly via the visa bulletin board.

Licenses and Visas

What type of visa do I need to work in the U.S.?

You will need an Employment-Based Permanent Resident Visa. U.S. imigration law provides aliens with a variety of ways to become a lawful permanent residents ( I-551 Green Card) through employment in the United States. The category for registered nurses is the employment-based (EB3) "preference immigrant" category.

How do I get a Permanent Resident Visa or a U.S. nursing license?

Once an employment offer is extended, Medliant will help you study for, and obtain, your U.S. nursing license. We will also handle all the requirements for your permanent resident nursing visa (Green Card).

Can I bring my family?

If you are married, your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 can legally relocate to the U.S. with you.

How do I get Permanent Resident Visas for my family?

When Medliant sponsors you for a Permanent Resident Visa, your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 will be able to apply at the same time.

Why do I need a Permanent Resident Visa?

A Permanent Resident Visa (I-551 Green Card) is proof of lawful permanent resident state in the United States. The card may also serve as a valid identification document and proof that you and your family is eligible to live and work in the United States.

Are there costs for the Permanent Resident visa?

Yes. We pay the filing fee for your permanent resident visa (Green Card). However, once your application is approved, you will be responsible for any fees associated with the processing of your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 included in the permanent resident visa application.

What is the VisaScreen Certificate?

Visa Credentials Assessment Service is a comprehensive service for healthcare professions seeking an occupational visa to work in the United States. Applicants who successfully complete VisaScreen receive an offical ICHP Certificate from the VisaScreen: Visa Credentials Assessment Service. This certificate satisfies the United States Federal screening requirements. Applicants who sucessfully complete VisaScreen receive a VisaScreen Certificate, which can be presented to a consular office, or in the case adjustment of status, the Attorney General, as part of a visa application.

Why Am I required to apply for and obtain a Visa-Screen certification?

After an immigration visa petition is approved and prior to a visa interview appointment at the U.S. Embassy. Foreign nurse graduates are required to complete this screening program as part of U.S. immigration requirements.

Is there a cost for the VisaScreen certificate?

Medliant will pay the cost for your VisaScreen application. If you require any additional training from your school of nursing or English language training to meet the minimum standards for the VisaScreen, the costs will be your responsibility. We reimburse for your NCLEX-RN and IELTS testing fees, once you start working for Medliant in the U.S.

What type of training do I need for the R.N. license?

To get your R.N. license, you will need to pass the NCLEX-RN examination. Medliant has a comprehensive training program and study materials to help prepare you for the exam.

What is the NCLEX-RN exam?

Once your application is accepted, the first step is to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Nurses must pass the computerized, multiple-choice NCLEX-RN exam to be eligible for American nursing employment. The NCLEX-RN exam, which covers five areas of nursing (medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, and obstetrics), is designed to test your knowledge and ability to provide high-quality patient care. The exam takes about five hours, and you will know your results within three weeks of taking the exam.

Who pays for the NCLEX-RN exam?

Medliant offers NCLEX sponsorship and will pay for the self-paced online NCLEX review and NCLEX exam upfront for qualified candidates.

Do I need the IELTS prior to applying?

No, you do not need IELTS before you apply with Medliant. It is important to be aware that you will need to pass the IELTS exam at some point in the process in order for us to obtain your VisaScreen Certificate (takes 2-3 months to process). You will be required to meed the requirements for IELTS to obtain an immigrant visa.

What is IELTS?

IELTS is an acronym for the International English Language Testing System, a standardized English language test that assesses an individual’s reading, writing, and verbal skills. The IELTS is an English language exam that allows non-native speakers to demonstrate their proficiency in the language.

Who Pays for the IELTS?

You will be responsible for the cost of the IELTS examination fee. Medliant will, however, reimburse you this cost when you present proof of passing as part of our NCLEX sponsorship program.

Do you offer permanent placement for nurses?

To help facilities cope with the ongoing nursing shortage, we offer our international R.N.'s on long-term assignments. We oversee the time-consuming nurse recruiting and hiring process, including education, licensure, and NCLEX-RN preparation. Medliant also provides pre- and post-arrival clinical support, cultural acclimation, relocation, and ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition for every nurse to the U.S.

How do you prepare nurses for their U.S. assignments?

Medliant works with nurses to ensure that they meet the specific clinical requirements of your facility and provides nurses with ongoing clinical support.
Our nurses receive full logistical support to ensure that housing, transportation, and other details are taken care of before they start at your facility. Medliant provides ongoing emotional and cultural support to ensure that our nurses are adjusting well. Our nurses are fully supported, so they are set for success at your facility.

How do you support nurses once they're on assignment?

All our nurses receive pre-assignment support to ensure they are properly trained to meet your facility's needs. We offer nurses ongoing clinical support for questions that arise on the job, as well as free, continuing education throughout their assignment.

Is it possible to extend a temporary assignment?

Yes, many nurses extend beyond their initial assignment. You can extend a temporary assignment for any duration to suit your facility's nursing plans.

Is there an additional charge if I decide to hire a nurse at the end of the temporary assignment?

No, once our nurses complete their contract, they are free to do as they please, they can join your facility or remain with us, it is completely up to the nurse.

What is the first step I need to take if I have a staffing need?

What kinds of nurse staffing do you provide?

Our nurses have a minimum of a BSN degree and four years' experience in an acute care facility.

Who handles immigration and licensing?

Medliant takes care of all the immigration and licensing details, so when they arrive on assignment, they are legal U.S. residents and fully licensed.
