What Is Contributing To The Nursing Shortage In The USA?

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2021), the Registered Nurse profession continues to be in high demand with an expected 7% growth in labor needed from 2019 to 2029 (AACN, 2021). In 2020, the national average for Registered Nurse vacancies across all US States was 6.5% (AACN, 2021). According to NSI (2021), the current 2021 Registered Nurse vacancy rate across all US States is 9.9% with 35.8% of hospitals in the USA reporting that they have a vacancy rate of greater than 10%.

In the USA, there are currently not enough Registered Nurses being educated to address the growing demand for nurses, let alone the current demand. One significant factor that is contributing to this is in part due to a shortage in nursing faculty available to educate prospective nursing students in the USA (AACN, 2021). Another factor, which is the most common reason for why qualified applicants are rejected from nursing schools in the USA is due to a shortage of clinical placements for nursing students to be trained (AACN, 2021).

In addition to the shortage of educated Registered Nurses graduating in the USA, those Registered Nurses who are among the aging baby boomer generation are beginning to retire, which is further contributing to the increasing vacancy and demand for nurses in the USA (NSI, 2021).

According to NSI (2021), the turnover rate for Registered Nurses continues to remain at 18.7% with hospitals having experienced an average turnover rate of 83% of their entire Registered Nurse staff since 2016, which is equivalent to hospitals needing to hire an entirely new full team of Registered Nurses every six years.

As a result of these factors that continue to contribute to the current and growing demand for Registered Nurses in the USA, international Registered Nurses who are educated, experienced, and qualified to work in the USA are in high demand.
