10 Tips For Future Medliant USRNs

Becoming a Medliant USRN is an exciting new journey to life in the USA for both you and your family! To ensure that you find as much success as possible as you prepare to meet the requirements for Green Card Visa sponsorship as a Registered Nurse, US immigration, and employment in the USA, you will want to ensure that you have the proper experience and certifications to do so! Below are 10 important tips for future Medliant USRNs to help you in your journey to beginning your American Dream!

Tip #1: Get 12 months of bedside acute care experience in a hospital with 100+ beds

  • Hospital experience as a bedside RN is both mandatory and important for those who wish to become a Medliant USRN! American style hospitals will often see and care for a wide variety of diagnoses’, surgeries, and patient populations, which is why getting experience in a hospital with 100+ beds is important as larger hospitals will often see a wide variety of cases as well. This experience in a larger hospital is meant to ensure that both you and the hospital you will be working at in the USA are able to find success as you transition to working as a USRN.

  • Medliant recommends getting 12 months of full-time RN experience in any of the following specialties: ICU, CCU, MICU, CVICU, Neuro ICU, Telemetry, High-Dependency Unit, PCU, Step-Down, Obstetrics, Emergency Department, or Med-Surg. Medliant will also consider applicants with pediatric or OR experience if you have adult bedside experience as an RN too.

Tip #2: Reach out to Medliant to begin your application

  • While 12 months of current hospital experience, the Academic IELTS or TOEFL, and the NCLEX-RN Exam are required for Medliant sponsorship, you can reach out to Medliant at anytime to begin your application and to learn how Medliant can guide and support you in your journey to become a USRN.

Tip #3: Prepare for and pass the NCLEX-RN Exam

  • The NCLEX-RN Exam is a requirement for all Registered Nurses (both domestic and international) to have passed in order to become licensed and work in the USA. Medliant is here to support you and help you prepare for the NCLEX-RN Exam to ensure that you pass on your very first attempt. Medliant will also reimburse the cost of the NCLEX-RN Exam once you begin working in the USA as a Medliant USRN.

Tip #4: Prepare for and pass the Academic IELTS or TOEFL English Assessment

  • English proficiency is a requirement to work in the USA as an international Registered Nurse. If you were educated in a language other than English or will be immigrating from a country where English is not the primarily spoken language, you will need to pass either the Academic IELTS or TOEFL English Assessment. OET is not accepted by CGFNS for your VisaScreen Certificate. Medliant will reimburse the cost of the English Assessment once you begin working in the USA as a Medliant USRN.

Tip #5: Apply for your US CGFNS VisaScreen Certificate

  • The CGFNS VisaScreen Certificate is a credential assessment that will review your bachelor of nursing degree courses, educational transcripts, and degree to ensure that your education is comparable to that of a US educated RN. CGFNS will also review your current nursing license in the jurisdiction that you are applying from to ensure there are no disciplinary actions against you and that you are able to practice as an RN. While the CGFNS VisaScreen may not be required by each individual US State for a nursing license, it is required by US immigration. Medliant will reimburse the cost of the US CGFNS VisaScreen once you begin working in the USA as a Medliant USRN.

Tip #6: Consider which US States you would like to work in

  • Medliant continues to employ international Registered Nurses in hospitals across many US States, however, the top locations at this time continue to be Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Florida. Medliant also has employment opportunities available in other states, however the ones listed above remain the most popular destinations to date.

  • Medliant encourages those international Registered Nurses who do not already have a US nursing license to do so through the state of Texas, as the process is fast, straightforward, and in one of the most desirable locations for international RNs to work in.

Tip #7: Continue to learn and grow as a Registered Nurse

  • As you continue to develop into a competent RN, you will find yourself implementing the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, ABCs, and Nursing Process into your care when you make decisions. Understanding what you are doing and why you are doing it is fundamental to a successful career as an RN. When you begin to anticipate what orders are needed and are able to make recommendations to providers who choose to accept those recommendations, this is a sign of excellence in the clinical setting.

  • It is important to also study lab values and tests, and to know what they mean as this will become an important component of being an RN in the USA.

Tip #8: Practice self-care

  • Being an RN is a challenging job, and while it is rewarding, it can also be stressful with the loss of life, high acuity, and business that occurs in the day-to-day practice setting. Taking time to focus on reflection, physical and mental health, and preventative holistic measures to ensure that you taking care of yourself, are important steps to a long and successful career as an RN.
