Checking In With Nurse Brennan: “What is your motivation to immigrate to the USA?”

As an international Registered Nurse, there are many reasons why people choose to immigrate to the USA. This can include a desire for:
•An increased standard of living
•Employment and economic opportunities
•Reunification with family or friends
•A good place to raise a family
•The thrill of adventure or change
•An improved quality of life
•Political freedom and individual acceptance

My personal motivations for why I chose to immigrate to the USA in 2019 included the employment and economic opportunities that came with working in the private US medical system as well as the thrill of adventure and change. I had worked in Canada for about 5 years leading up to this decision and had always dreamed of one day living and working in the USA. Coming from a public tax payer funded medical system in Canada, I knew the economic and employment opportunities would be more prosperous in the US private medical system and that was where I needed to be.

Not having any family or friends in the USA when I first arrived, this move was also an opportunity to challenge myself in different ways and to grow both personally and professionally. I developed a new found love for my independence and an excitement to explore and seek adventure, knowing that I would create new friendships along the way. I remember the excitement of boarding the plane to the USA on a one way ticket in November of 2019 and how real the moment felt once I stepped out of the airport in San Francisco, California. It felt as if I turned the page to start a brand new chapter in my life, and one that would surely become the most exciting yet to this day.

To me, becoming a USRN isn’t only about the employment opportunities that come with it, but also the life opportunities that it brings too. Looking back after almost 2.5 years in the USA, I wouldn’t change a thing. Getting to explore the USA from coast to coast, live by the ocean, hike on my days off, attend an infinite number of concerts and sporting events, and to learn and grow as a USRN has been incredible, and I’m forever thankful for it all.

Immigrating to the USA was the best decision that I could have made for myself and I’m excited for everyone who is motivated to pursue their American dream too with Medliant!
