Pathway from Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) to U.S. Citizen for USRNs

As a Medliant USRN you will become a permanent resident along with your family dependents. A commonly asked question is how can I become a U.S. citizen? In the United States, the pathway from being a permanent resident (Green Card holder) to becoming a U.S. citizen involves several steps. Here’s a general overview of the process:

1. Maintain Permanent Residency

  • Residency Requirements: Ensure you maintain your status as a lawful permanent resident. This includes residing in the U.S., not abandoning your permanent resident status, and following the conditions of your residency.

2. Meet Eligibility Requirements

  • Residency Duration: Generally, you must have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years.

  • Physical Presence: You need to have been physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the 5-year period.

  • Continuous Residence: You must have maintained continuous residence in the U.S. and not have taken long trips abroad that might interrupt your residency.

  • Good Moral Character: You must demonstrate good moral character, which involves adhering to U.S. laws and ethical standards.

3. Prepare and Submit Form N-400

  • Application: File Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form can be filed online or by mail.

  • Documentation: Provide required documents, such as a copy of your Green Card, photographs, and any other supporting documents.

4. Attend a Biometrics Appointment

  • Biometrics: After submitting Form N-400, you will receive a notice to attend a biometrics appointment. This involves fingerprinting and photographing for background checks.

5. Complete the Citizenship Interview

  • Interview: Attend an interview with a USCIS officer. During this interview, you will be asked questions about your application and background.

  • English and Civics Tests: You will need to pass a test on English (reading, writing, and speaking) and U.S. civics (government, history, and geography).

6. Receive a Decision

  • Approval or Denial: After the interview, USCIS will issue a decision on your application. If approved, you will be scheduled for a naturalization ceremony. If denied, you may have options for appeal or reapplication.

7. Attend the Naturalization Ceremony

  • Oath of Allegiance: If your application is approved, you will be invited to a naturalization ceremony where you take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

  • Certificate of Naturalization: After taking the oath, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming a U.S. citizen.

Be sure to follow these steps as they will help you to meet all requirements and procedures for becoming a U.S. citizen.
