This blog post will help you prepare for the reading section of the Academic IELTS and get the required band score that you need to immigrate to the USA (6.5 bands overall and 7 bands in speaking)!

The Academic reading section is comprised of three sections and will take 60 minutes to complete. Here are five tips to help you prepare for and pass the Academic IELTS reading section:

1. Familiarize yourself with the format of the Academic IELTS reading section: The reading section consists of three sections (passages) of increasing difficulty. Each passage is followed by a set of questions. It is important to make sure that you understand the types of questions that will be asked and the format of the passages. The questions you will be asked may include multiple choice, identifying information (true or false or not given), identifying writer’s views or claims (yes or no or not given), matching information (headlines, features, or sentence endings), label completion (sentence, summery, note, table, flow-chart, or diagram), and short-answer questions.

2. Practice reading a variety of texts: The IELTS reading section tests your ability to read and understand a variety of texts. Make sure you practice reading different types of texts, such as newspaper articles, books, journals, magazine articles, and academic texts. The texts you will read during the exam will come from authentic sources such as those listed. The passages are for non-specific audiences and are academic topics of general interest. Passages may also contain diagrams, graphs, or illustrations.

3. Develop your reading speed: The IELTS reading section is timed and should be completed within 60 minutes, so it is important to develop your reading speed. Practice reading passages quickly and accurately.

4. Learn how to skim and scan readings: Skimming and scanning are important skills for the IELTS reading section. Skimming is the process of quickly reading a text to get the main idea. Scanning is the process of quickly looking for specific information in a text. Make sure to identify key words and highlight or underline them as you skim through each passage. Also be sure to understand the introduction and conclusion of each passage to identify what the author’s point of view is.

5. Practice answering IELTS reading questions: Make sure you practice answering IELTS reading questions. This will help you become familiar with the types of questions that will be asked and the format of the answers. Remember, one mark is given for each correct answer, so you will want to complete all 40 questions. Spelling mistakes result is lost points, so it is important to be careful when writing your answers on the answer sheet provided.
