What Is A Social Security Number (SSN) And Why Do I Need One?

A Social Security Number (SSN) is unique 9 digit number assigned to each US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or those authorized to work in the USA (nonimmigrant workers). Employers in the USA require your SSN in order to report both your income to the IRS and your social security wages to the Social Security Administration.

A SSN is used to monitor your income earnings and taxes that are paid or due. A SSN is also used to open a new bank or credit card account, take out a financial loan, purchase a car or home, apply for a passport, or receive government benefits or insurance.

Your SSN is a valuable and an important document assigned specifically to you and is part of your identity. It is important to protect your SSN Card and to not simply provide your SSN to anyone who requests it. Never share your SSN on social media as it can be used in identity theft against you. Your SSN will often appear on your tax documents (W2s) and bank statements. These documents should be kept in a safe place.

Medliant will assist you in applying for your SSN with your EB3 Green Card Visa application. However, if you were to arrive in the USA under an eligible visa, you would traditionally visit a Social Security Administration office who will then assign you a SSN and mail you your SSN Card to your address in the USA. You should receive your SSN Card within approximately 3 to 4 weeks of requesting it. If you do not receive your SSN Card, you can contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.
